Its probably the mainshaft double roller bearing in the gear box. Or maybe your diff bearings. Either way its an engine out job to fix it. Or maybe it whines because it doesnt want you to slow down. I had a girlfriend like that once.
Ha ha, I once had one that whined when I didn't slow down.... never solved that problem either!
If you've never had a Mini before and are used to other cars, then the gearbox whine when changing down is quite prominent. They did it to a certain extent even when they were new.

Mine was, well up until it broke up and sent a ******* load of metal filings round the oil pump and bearings.

OOhh!! that sounds expensive... This is probably the worst case scenario..... It might go bang next week or it might last for ages. This is a silly question butIts probably the mainshaft double roller bearing in the gear box. Or maybe your diff bearings. Either way its an engine out job to fix it. how long have you had the mini? has it always been like this? does it only happen when you slow down?
Are you just very lucky and have just bought a mini with a straight cut box and drop gears.

If the last bit was directed at me.
Getting on 6 years and 20k of general hard use and developed the wine over the last year mostly in 4th at 30mph.
That was until it broke up (soon after an oil change), trashed the pump, crank and bearings. If I was to add it all up my bill comes to about £250 on parts, as I did all of the work on the drive (hence my user pick at the mo)
That’s the new oil pump, bearings, gearbox bits, gaskets etc. luckily I had a spare decent crank I’d saved for a future engine build.
It now back in and despite a little gearshift problem with the gearbox to begin with, which has seamed to have loosened up amd sorted it's self. The gearbox does seam to feel a lot tighter and a heck of a lot quieter than before.

mine used to whine when changing down a gear at high revs too, untill the diff went pop
I must add: it wasn't linked though
