The term “redtop” is colloquially used in reference to GM’s C20XE engine, which was used in many Vauxhall models. It is also broadly used to refer to the various Vauxhall cars that used this engine. The C20XE is referred to as “redtop” because of its distinctive appearance and pleasing looks. The “redtop” was launched almost two decades ago, and was very advanced for its time. It was well sought after, and was widely used in many motorsports events in many specialist race version cars. It has developed some sort of a cult following and is still scouted for by enthusiasts.
The redtop engine is a 16 valve DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) engine with a displacement of 1998 cc (2.0 L). This inline 4-cylinder engine is capable of developing 110 kW (150 PS). Many Vauxhall models used the C20XE engine. The second generation Vauxhall Astra GTE used a 156 BHP C20XE engine, and is colloquially referred to as a Vauxhall Astra redtop. The limited edition “Champion” Astra, which was launched in 1990, also made use of the C20XE redtop engine. The Vauxhall Calibra, first unveiled in 1990, used a 150 BHP variant of the C20XE engine. Modified Vauxhall Corsas, featuring the C20XE engine conversions, are extremely popular amongst the boy racer crowd.
