ive aquired what I was told is a clutch master cylinder - its got a groove cut into the stem but this is half way up it - its not at the very base of stem (about 1 cm up from the bottom ) is this the later type clutch master cylinder ? should the grove be right at the base if it is ? i'm worried im going to rebuild and fit a brake master cylinder !
any thoughts ?!
cheers

The foot on the brake cylinder is at a different orientation to the clutch, so if the one you have looks at the same angle as the original one, you will be fine.

The groove tells you that you have 2 ring seals in it rather than the earlier cup seal. It doesn't tell you whether it's a clutch or brake cylinder.
The foot on the brake cylinder is at a different orientation to the clutch, so if the one you have looks at the same angle as the original one, you will be fine.
many thanks chaps, thats put my mind at rest - my mini 25 been re shelled and not finished and stood 2 years plus - it had a pre verto slave cylinder fitted !(fitted on the verto mounting bracket !) i've fitted a brand new slave cylinder, braided hose and rebuilt the the above mentioned master cylinder which was in very good condition, especially the bore.
As usual ?? Ive had a lot of trouble trying to bleed the clutch - tried eazi bleed plus an assistant - the clutch pedal goes to the floor and WILL NOT RETURN - you have to physically pull it back up - hence my question re the master cylinder. could be the pedal return spring is very worn or incorrectly fitted ?
going to try two person bleeding with a pipe immersed in brake fluid
any thoughts on the clutch pedal not returning ?
many thanks once again

When you rebuilt it, did it have a little white plastic device at the top in the bore? If so, this is a non return valve which is used in the brake cylinder.

Did you check the orientation of the foot/reservoir? When looking down from above, the clutch one has one of the fixing holes right under the reservoir and the other one well outside. The brake has the foot orientated in a way that both fixing holes are near the edge of the reservoir.
When you rebuilt it, did it have a little white plastic device at the top in the bore? If so, this is a non return valve which is used in the brake cylinder.
On mine, the rear fixing hole is situated under the reservoir ( the filler cap is above this hole when looking down on it) the other is clear. so pretty sure its a clutch master
