A quick query for Arthur, 1988 City E, "Stage One Kit". (I searched but nothing quite answered my questions)

Arthur has suffered some damage to his oil filler cap, here is a pic of his cap on his rocker cover BEFORE it got broken:

I've spent the morning chasing around locally in someone else's car to try to get hold of it, but no one who's open on a Saturday morning seems to stock it, alternatives they offered don't fit/seal in my rocker cover.

Two questions for you lovely TMFers:

1) is it ok to drive without it a) for a short distance - say 5 miles b) for any other journey? (and an explanation of why/why not would also be welcome, ta)
2) I think the correct replacement is this one from minispares, am I right?

I don't want to pay a fortune for speedy delivery only for it to be the wrong part

Thanking you.

It should be ok for 5 miles, might get a bit of oil splash on your bonnet and rocker cover, just stick somthing on it like a condom with a elastic band holding it on, the worst that's going to happen is you're going to loose oil.

that minispares 1 will fit too

Ok, ta, yeah I saw ipod's solution while I was searching!

So the only problem with not having your oil filler cap is the risk of splashing, it's not pressurised in a way that would affect anything very much?

no, well pressure can build up but that's a bad thing, so you could just poke a small hole in the jonny but the caps are vented to relive pressure AFAIK.

the pressure would pop the condom off, that's why it might be a idea just a poke a hole in it to make sure, as mine used to build up a little bit.

Tape two sheets of Bounce over it. Ventilation and keeps crap out.

Wait, do they even still make Bounce?

^ ^ ^ what danrock said!

*Oh hang on, are they 'laundry sheets' or something you put in the tumble dryer, about the size of a tissue?*

As Adam says, I think it's more a case of keeping crap out than stopping oil pouring out, I've ran without one and nothing noticable came out... I've ran the engine with no rocker cover on, oil comes out then, but not under any "great" pressure...

Oil will splash out off the rockers after a period of time though

Just cover it over the best you can- there's plenty of oil splash up top but shouldn't be pressure as such, unless the engine is so worn that crankcase compression is getting all the way up to the rocker box (engine rebuild looming) :(
