I have a 1988 austin mini 998 and the first click on the rocker switch turns the side lights on, but when clicked again to dipped beam there is no change, apart from that it then allows you to put the main beam on. Where is the in line fuse for the dim dip, if any, and what else may be causing this ?

thanks, sonny

You don't mean just the headlight flasher works? - guess not, but to be clear

I'll have to learn the change dates...

It could be the dim/dip relay if your car has one,

look for the assosciated ballast relay (aluminium thingy with 2 wires) on the bulkhead near the radiator.

Thanks for the reply and i'll try and explain very clearly

The sidelights do work

The dipped beam does NOT work

The main beam and flash do work, but only when the rocker switch is on the second click. (As they should)

I think i have found the relay you are talking about it is a small aluminium box with two wires, fitted into the sound deadening on the right hand side (radiator side) of the bulkhead. Could it be that this has ''broken'' and will just need replacing or will it just be connections etc.

thanks

Carefull here sonny - I think you have found the hazard / indicator relay here. The pink relay is hidden underneath the dash rail in front of the steering wheel.

have you checked that all the plugs at the front are plugged in? its like little bullet connectors, they are something at can easily vibrate out.

failing that bad earth maybe?

by at the front, do you mean going in to the back of the headlights, like from under the wing?

where are the lights earthed to ?

He means to check the bullet connections tucked up underneath the slam panel - where the bonnet catches down. There will be a group of 3 connections. One black (earths), one blue with white, one blue with red.

Blue red is dip beam - it could be as simple as a broken wire, either behind the grille or at the column switch. Unplug the connector at the steering column and you can narrow down where to look with a continuity tester - or just bridging to a live wire (blue to blue/red on the loom side with the lights on).

As L400RAS said, I think you've found the hazard flasher - if there is a headlight ballast it's looks like a strip of alloy with a wire at each end.
