I have recently aquired what i belive to be a MG metro engine. Though Im struggling to find info relating to its number, which is 12HD24 117372.

I also have some other questions regarding this engine

1. I have been turning it over with the bottom pulley. It gains compression, but seems quite easy to me. there is a hiss and then onto the next cylinder in the sequence. The rocker gear is not present. Would this suggest that a rebore is required.

2. the oil filter housing looks differnt, it looks like it may have been connected to the water system. Should i ditch this? Seems weird how it looks like it may be heated, but folk opt for oil coolers :D

3. the starter motor looks different. im presuming its pre engaged system?

4. the distributor is electronic, should i stick with it, or put another one in there? is this the difference between balasted and non balasted?

That engine number certainly looks like an MG Metro engine.

If the rocker gear isn't present then all the valves should be closed throughout the rotation and providing resistance to compression, it depends how resistant it is to move by hand. difficult to advise really without putting rocker gear on and doing a compression test. I wouldn't go to the extent of an engine strip down without a compression test, the bores could be okay.

Some MG Metro's (I thought it was just the turbos but I could be wrong) had a water cooled oil cooler.

Pre engaged staers have a "lump" on top / side of the starter containing the starter solenoid and engaging mechanism. Later Minis had these also.

Standard electronic ignition is fine, generally quite reliable, and better than having to change points.

cheers Mal,

The starter has the lump on the side, and when the engine is installed it would face the front, though im not sure if it would foul up on the front panel.

One thing i forgot to ask is does anyone jnow what the final drive will be, without taking the diff off?

Does anyone know the bore specs for this engine, as ill be striping it and want to inspect the bores with an internal micrometer. Is it low or high compression, and which pistons would be required if i decided to have it rebored.

Also the guy i bought it off told me that the diff will need changing to suit 12 inch wheels, anyone know what needs putting in, in place of the 3.4:1. cheers
