Im getting a tapping noise, that increases with engine speed but isnt loud enough to be heard over 2k rpm, it sounds like a slack chain???

ive got vernier duplex timing gears/chain and the tensioner is NOT on, will this be the cause perhaps?

the engine is running fine otherwise

the only sound i can liken it to is like when something vibrates as if its off centre and it slaps the chain but not quite, its kinda wierd

took it to Sleaford Mini Centre for the rolling road, and they couldnt work out what the noise was, it doesnt sound like its a major thing, it doesnt sound like little ends and its definatley not a clunking sound, just wondering if anyones experienced the same problem?

oh and its coming from the top right of the engine, all valve clearances are set to the correct gap

Top right as viewed from the front of the car? If so then timing chain is the area in which to investigate.

On the other end of the engine, could be primary gear endfloat, idler gear float or idler bearings.

nah its not on the flywheel side, i had thought it was the idler or primary, but on closer inspection its coming from the other side, damn thing wont start now

Are you still using the mechanical fuel pump. I found these to make a tapping noise that is irritating rather than a problem  The reason being that at low rpm the engine is not using very much fuel and the float valve in the carb shuts off so the pump is now idling, so to speak, wich is why it dissapears at higher rpm.

that kinda suggests that its possibly some sort of lubrication problem - ie - when the oil is thicker its lubricating whatever is rattling, and as it warms and thins then the noise rears its head as whatever's rattling stops receiving as much lubrication?

Daft question, not your rockers hitting the rocker cover? (actually no it can't be else the noise wouldn't disappear above 2k - ignore that)

Isolate the noise by using a long screwdriver with a big handle. Place the tip against the engine at areas where you suspect the tap is coming from, place the handle end against the little flappy bit infront of your ear above the ear lobe, push this flapy bit with the handle into the ear and seal off the ear hole. This way converting the screwdriver into a stethascope.

Sounds totaly daft but is very effective and costs less than a stethascope, unless you don't own a screwdriver
