hi everyone,
i need some help.
i have recently fitted a cheap quick shift to my 1992 mini mayfair and it used to pop out of 2nd gear when accelerating and braking. so i found an orginal new gear stick on ebay, i brought it and fitted it and its still poping out of gear. it never used to do it when i had a standard gearstick in before i fitted the cheap quick shift.
somebody please help. im lost with ideas on where to go next

thanks jake.

If it is only doing this when accelerating or braking, I would suspect the top engine stabilisers - the engine is moving in the subframe, thus it is pulling itself out of gear. With the handbrake on, neal down infront of the car, grab the rocker cover, push and pull the engine forwards , backwards and watch for movement in the steady.

Otherwise check the bobbin mounts of the gear leaver housing.

Did you fit a new rubber seal or hose between the gearbox and the shifting rod? They are sometimes too strong/long and push the gear back out.

hi after i read both of your comments giving me advice i went out and looked at the top engine steady bar the bottom bush was split so i ordered some and have fitted them but its still popping out of gear. i have fitted a new gear selector oil seal as i noticed it was leaking but its popping out the same as it did when i fitted the quickshift. would it be to do with the rod that is just mounted to the box from the selector is that doesnt move when selecting gear is too tight or too loose ?

all help will be greatful. im confused on where to go next.

thanks jake

hi did you get under the car and have a good look at the mounting bobbins under the gear lever as suggested by L400RAS. if they were worn it could have been made worse by movement when changing lever. i have tried a few types of cheaper gear levers as supplied by many top mini parts suppliers and i have yet to find one that fits properley. some dont even fit at all like the KAD copy sold by pl minis. KAD are the best when funds allow. hope you get it sorted.

Make sure the gear lever does not touch the chassis when in second gear and get's knocked out of gear that way with the slightest movement.

I suspect your gearbox was already 'marginal' - and using the daft 'kwik shift' has further damaged the dog teeth on 2nd gear - and so no matter what you do now, it' s going to need rebuilding - with a new second gear fitted along with all the usual gearbox overhaul parts.
Regulars on here know I regularly rail against the use of 'kwik shaft' gear links - if you want to change gear quickly - just move your arm a bit faster. BUT - you WILL damage second gear unless you learn to double-de-clutch on the downshift. Simples.
