rebuilt 1275cc. piper hr270 cam.stage 1. hif38 AAA needle.

been struggling for months with my minis engine. when i sit at 70mph about 3500rpm(or its held at anything from 3500-6000) for a period of time it get what feels like a misfire (loss of power) and a metallic banging sound. its a sudden noise like somethings let go. but then if i let the revs drop or just knock it out of gear for a few seconds and let it idle it clears, if i rev it either with the clutch down of out of gear(clutch up) it will still make the noise and sound like its misfiring and ive switched the engine off a soon as it happens and the noise is still there. it runs absolutely fine around town etc and will happily rev up to 6000rpm through the gears.

things ive tried:

different dizzy, cap, leads, plugs, points, coils, timing, rockers, valve springs, checked cam timing, mixture settings, exhausts. none of these things has made any difference to the problem. now i dont know what to try. i dont think its any of the gears as i think they would have exploxed by now but i could be wrong.

any ideas would be appreciated?

thanks.
