as the title states really, would around the 600cc mark work or is it getting too small of a displacement, had a quick look at the zx6r and they produce around 120hp and almost 50 ft-lb of torque. plus id imagine the engine is smaller.
Are 600cc (or Thereabouts) A Viable Option?

thats exactly what i was thinking, why not. i mean looking at the specificastions of a lot of them, the horsepower and torque is not all that far off a 1000cc. plus im sure it will be easier for me to fit it in the right way round on my own fabricated subframe. im also looking at a lot of 750cc's and most are around the 120bhp mark.

600 bike engines are very peaky and lack any torque, with the weight of a car these 600's would not perform well

that was one of my worries about them. think i read somewhere that the standard a-series 998 engine has about 48ft-lb of torque? so if any bike engine has more than this then it would perform as well/better than the a-series surely. i dont need loads of horsepower, think id be happy with anything over 100hp, so most 600cc and over give this, as well as more torque by about 20ft-lb+ than the a-series looking at all the specifications of each bike ive looked at as a donor.
found this, and it looks like it goes pretty well.

The smallest I would go in a mini is 900, in terms of size they are very similiar to the 600, minis aren't as light as the kit cars can be and therefore would definately benefit from more horsepower and torque, also the peak torque can be at 11,700 rpm on a R6 for instance.
I have a GSXR750 K1 with 140 plus horsepower, with all ancillaries for sale this is the fuel injected one and very high reving, I think the redline is about 14,000rpm something like that
Here is a westfield with a gsxr750 motor in it
Cheers

Having had 600cc and 1000cc bikes I can't really see what you would gain from having the smaller capacity engine in a mini; there is very little difference, if anything, between the two units in terms of physical size and weight. Also, take the power claims on the 600s especially with a big pinch of salt!!

Try a 750 engine, good comprimise between the two (:
suzuki's GSXR-750 is good, and Hondas VFR V4 engine is very very good too. I drove a desert buggy with the honda engine a year ago and it was quite quick to say the least (:
