good find, i think ive tried a lot of the ideas in there, just because my insurance is quite high being 22 and male,

ill try most things if it means it will work out cheaper.

i found that by ignoring the request from my insurer to renew my insurance helped massively.

they put in that letter that they will do it automatically on a said date, so i left it until the day before, allowing them to think i was happy.

id phoned a couple of other classic insurers and go some better quotes (by about £75).

so as above i phoned them the day before to say i want to cancel my automatic renewal, they usual questions ensued,

why?
ive got a better quote,
who from??
blah blah,
oohhh we can smash that out of the water (actual words from the lad on the phone).

in the end i stayed with my insurer from last year, they beat my renewal (their own quote) by £150, allowed me to add all modifications ( everything from the stage 1 kit, down to my halogen headlights) increased my annual milage from the previous year and offered an agreed value.

its really worth pushing your luck, i did.
At the end of the day they want your money, regarless of the risk you pose they will always do all they can not to pay out.

Careful on "tweaking your job description" that's advised. If you are caught, the insurance company can refuse to pay out fully.

What should I say ? I'm a Chartered Manufacturing Engineer, employed as a Lean Improvement Consultant, on medium term contracts (6 to 18 months) via a ltd company with I happen to be the only shareholder of and therefore the Manageing Director.

Do I say : MD, Contractor, Business Consultant, or Engineer ?

You guessed it : Engineer.

I got my insurance down £120 just by adding my mum and dad as named drivers! So i'm 24 paying £250 for a 1.6 escort which I dont think is bad at all.

lets face it with the economic climate as it is now people are from job to job, and the least of their worries is telling the car insurance people.

i wouldnt worry too much when people dont declase things like engine changes/ rebores/ alloys etc.

Every car owners should have its accident coverage but today there are still some drivers who don't have any. No matter how safe the drivers and the vehicles are, accidents on the road can happen any time. Once you have chosen the right insurance policy with the right coverage and the right price, your work doesn't end there. You should also take a look at the insurance company.

playing them off is the best idea
also locked garage helps aswell as a good alarm
but saying that at 19 without the alarm my mini cab cost me £1600 -.-
considering my rover 1.4 16v cost me £800

Managed to get my mondeo insurance down from £1500 tpft for just £950 fully comp by sticking the wife on the insurance. She has a provisional licence and probably only (trys to) drives it for about 20 mins a year =]

With regards to careers, putting down sign maker was £3 cheaper than putting down sign engraver. When i notified my insurer of this years change in career status it didnt make a difference apart from them charging me £10 admin to change it and being an electrical contractor flittering in and out of work i could do without the £10 charge every time so will probably just leave it as contractor.

Oh yeah, playing them off is good, when i got an insurance quote online with HIC it was £410 but when i rang them up and got a quote they asked what my cheapest quote was, so i told them £410. They didnt ask who with, they just went on to try and beat it and smashed their own quote by £40 :w00t:

Certain jobs, like working in a pub push premiums up!

They must assume you're going to drive home drunk every night!

That will be because they will (probably quite correctly) expect you to be driving home at "peak time" which is 11pm to 6am. When i had a PAYG insurance from norich union it cost me 10p per mile to drive in the day time and a whopping £1 a mile at peak time. Needless to say i got rid of it due to regularly travelling 2-300 miles a time after 11pm and didnt fancy paying £10k a year for insurance =]

Edit - mechanics pay a lot and so do actors of those working in the armed forces.
