Uncertain whether to invest in winter tyres

Okay the car has minilite type 12 inch alloys and the rear tyres are border line legal.

Now I'm thinking. November is soon upon us and these are cheap enough. Could put them on the front with the nangkangs on the back and then in April swap them around and fit the winter tyres at the back.

Take a look at the current posts in 'Mini Chat' about Snow Chains. It covers snow tyres and what is available.

This :

DOES not answer my question.

our mini lives in the flat bit of merseyside and never sees so much as a hill. Snow is NEVER deep, as in 3 cm would be the worst.

The question is - will they wear out fast in the summer ?

for 145s I wouldn't bother with winter tyres. A new set of non-racing type tyres will do for the winter.

Tyre wear is dependent on how you drive. If you drive a Winter tyre quickly on dry tarmac, it will wear more quickly that a close-pattern tyre. A Yoko Winter tyre is still probably better than the average ordinary tyre from mid-range manufacturers.
So long as you don't drive with power on through ntight corners, then wear rate could be expected to be reasonable, but never good. The tyre is intended for wet and slippy conditions after all.

The main difference with these tyres is the rubber remains soft at low temperatures.

Plenty of people here in Sweden use these type (m&s) all year round with no problems. I for one have them on my alfa romeo. But obviously they are soft so will wear out quicker than standard tyres.

However the ones you posted are pretty cheap!

I'm getting some winter tyres and some 12" steelies or cheap 12" alloys, I'm going to use them during winter and take them off in summer, you can use them in summer but they will most likely wear quicker in summer and potentially cause a bit more noise. If this is not the case then why is there such thing as a summer tyre :) 2 would be enough really, obviously on the front but I'm cosidering getting 4, I don't think you NEED them in the UK but you can't put a price on a bit of a extra safetey, it's ok driving slowly but you can't always avoid other people, this could help you brake just in time, even if it's to avoid the person running across the road to catch the bus who just slipped on ice in middle of the road.

Well the acid test was i didnt crash the mini in a harsh Swedish winter last year lol.

But on a serious note i was really impressed with them. I drove the mini almost every day in all weather and never had a problem.!

Saying that if i had seen the yokos (at that price), i might of been inclined to buy them instead

If any body else was thinking of winter tyres the Yoko Guardex F600 are amazing! i fitted them ealier in the year to a set of 12" steelies (I bought them just before the snow came) and I was bombing around in those quite happily. The grip available on snow and ice was incredible. When the roads are dry or wet the best comparison I can make it was like driving on the skinny 145 10" falken tyres. But for snow they were great and didnt seem to wear to badly.
