I have a MG Metro engine that im surrently rebuilding.

I have noticed a Silver rivet on the head and one on the block also, does this mean its a silver seal engine? I have searched engine numbers but mine does not match up to any silver seal engines (12HD24) The guy I bought it off said that the silver rivet meant unleaded and a gold rivet meant it was leaded.

Also when unbolting the aluminium flywheel housing the bolts made a hiss and a crackle, similar to lighting a match. Has anyone every noticed this occurance?
I have been told that this implies that the engine has never been taken apart since leaving the factory. If its right then i know that the engine has not been messed about with too much.

The rivets are probably the ones which close off the oil galleries after drilling. There's no truth in the colour denoting leaded or unleaded, and with a 12HD24 engine number it wont be a silver/gold seal engine ( not that either is anything special other than a factory recon unit - and usually have been made from bits left in the parts bin )

Your engine.... http://www.guess-wor...m...P2S=&EN_NO=

The hissing noise is actually not uncommon, and 99% of the time means the bolt has not been taken out since the engine was built in the factory, so could be considered a good sign... ie the engine has not been played around with, it's the gasses escaping which were trapped when the bolts were originally loctited in ( they may still have a blue ring round the bottom 3rd of the thread )

Im not sure mate,

The cast numbers on mine are really poor, it vaugy reads 12g940. But half of the `0` is missing as a pushrod hole has taken it out, so I cant tell if there is a `B`, at the end. Is there any onther way to identify between them.
Inlet valve is 35mm and exhaust is 29mm if that helps?

yea i think mine has the same size valves..... a 12g940 has the temp sender taped into the head but the 12g940b has no temp sender on the head.... that would prob be the easiest way to tell.....

i'm hoping my engine turns out to be as good as yours, nice job
