I'm about to start my mk1 restoration, so obviously I'm thinking about the final stage in the process...
When you spray, what do you do with the doors?
take them off and spray the doors and hinges separately?
Spray the doors and hinges on the body? If you do this, what happens when you first move the door after the paint hardens? surely the paint could peel on the hinge?

You'll want to remove the doors really. That way you can spray them inside and out and also around the frame.
You should mask up the hinges and lock mechanisms if they're not being stripped off the door.

I've never resprayed a MK 1, so I cant really comment on the external hinge aspect. But I have resprayed a later model, which I did with the doors off and with them suspended from the garage ceiling on wires. This meant that I could easily get all the way around them with the spray gun and avoided the hard to reach areas being "missed"with the paint. (I can't see how you would easily get any paint at all on places such as the underside of the door frame, if you were to spray the doors "in situ" on the car!) It also helped with ensuring that I got paint into some of the hard to reach areas on the door aperture too. I also did the same thing with the bonnet & boot lid as well, (i.e. removed them from the car & hung them up to respray them).

I spray everything separately. Doors, boot, bonnet, hinges, bonnet stay, bonnet catch, the lot.
Takes a little longer but looks better.

I would spray all the parts seperately myself. However they were painted on from factory but only for speed i would think.
