Hi, has anyone else used a cereal pack to make a gasket for between the charger and inlet manifold? I used gasket sealant and since it's under compression, I'm sure it will be fine (not burn I mean).
Or am I alone? Should I be using a steel gasket with some gasket sealant
Apparently I still have a leak in the system somewhere but can't find it. It may be a faulty inlet manifold but I have already had the flange facings straightened and all other weak points rewelded professionally.
Carb is as rich as it will go with a BCA needle but with full choke the car will not idle, and splutters. When it does start the revs are extremely high.
Any thoughts?

I use cereal boxes for all my thermostat housing gaskets, wouldnt know about a charger + manifold - i assume that you need something a little less burnable.....

Agree, gasget paper can be purchased in A4 sheets in various thickness grades for as little as something like 50p a sheet and its made for the job, and you dont have to wait for the family to finnish the breakfast before cutting up the box.

if you need a gasket for a Eaton M45 just go to a friendly BMW dealer and buy one, its steel with sealant already on it.
and it's cheap enough not to make your own

Can't use a BMW gasket as I have modified the opening to improve air flow. I will revert to using gasket paper then, just thought I'd try a cereal packet. Gasket paper isn't that resistant to temperature- around 120 I think.

sorry, i thought you mean the gasket at the pressure side.
if you mean the intake side of the charger, use what ever is handy.
and you may find gasket paper that can hold more than 200°C, but its hardy needed
