Hello  Just a quick question, i've got a 1998 MPi mini, to which i have slowly retrofied into a works MK2 replicaish look, Looking through some old issues of miniworld, and some old pictures at some mini shows, ive noticed that some people have added MK1/2 mini sliding windows to there MK3 onwards doors, so converting from wind up windows to sliding windows.

So i was just wondering if any one has done this conversion on here, is there a kit you can buy? or a quick "how i done it" answer would be great, any pics would be great

Also noticed external hinges on a MK3 onwards car, to which still has internal hinges, so giving that retro look as well, any info on that would be great also.

Cheers, Graeme, :(

Looks great though! Or you could try doing your own conversion, but you might be looking at 2 new doors unless you want to use your current ones. I was thinking of the kit but could think of lots of other things to spend 300 quid on, not on my priority list atm!

Yep, although mine was only £100 ish for al the bits and windows on the 89 green one.

If your good at finding the parts, I could easily cut up another set of windows in 4mm for £75 or thicker stuff to what plastics for performance use in 6mm polycarbonate for £105.

Cheers for the advice, i may take you up on the offer. The last time i had anything to do with sliding windows was on my MK1 years ago, if i remember rightly, they just unscrewed from the botton window slide, and slid in and out. i'll have to look into what prices the other bits come to, and go from there? Just wondering how to screw in the bottom window slider, as obviously theres a hole where the wind up window is? did you have to weld in some metal on your doors??

No welding required (providing the doors are solid), it’s just a case of removing the glass and winder (could probably be kept) cutting a slot down each side of the flange that the inner weather strip fitted to. But carefully with something up inside the door, so you don’t lose the factory crease, hammer/fold over the flange/lip.

If it needs it you may need to bond/weld a few little bracket to stop the outer door skin from bulging out too much and that’s about it regarding fabrication to the doors them self’s.

Then the whole of the windows/sliders is held in place by only 2 screws, one in ceach end of the slider lower felt strip and that’s it.

As for the extras:

You need 6 meters of double ‘w’ shaped mk1 sliding window felt track available form phoenix supplies for around £20

A left and right mk1chrome slider rails, anywhere around the £20 for decent second-hand ones, a lot more for new ones.

And then 2 front and 2 rear mk1 plastic sliding window catches, I picked up a handful at a show (Malvern) for 6 and made a good set from the bits of witch I still have a few left over. But they’re only something like a fiver each for new ones from the lies of minimine.

The most expensive item is the windows, but that’s because they are from polycarbonate, not cheap dangerous acrylic/plastic.

Damn it, would of been up for getting hold of a set for my mini, spose you got it a bit cheaper as well, for a group buy. Have any of you guys fitted the windows yet? as was wondering how you got on? straight forward or a right pain in the ****! A piccie would be fabulous, as wouldn't mind seeing how they looked.

Cheers, Graeme,

Just want to revive this thread, has anyone got any pic's of their installations or group buy intentions?
