Model:1992 British Open with 1275 and HIF38 carb
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Hi Guys,

I've a problem with my electrics...
Today I wanted to try the starter, it didn't do a thing, no clics no nothing.
Took it out and visually checked it, contact and everything...
Installed it again, turn ignition and....right, nothing.
If I short the +terminal on the solenoid with the big spade conn. it wil rapidly click and spark but not engage the flywheel.
I also seem to be having a bad earth somewhere, indicators are fast, and sometimes all electrics just die, only to revive again when I wiggle the earth on the battery. Solved that but there still is a bad earth someplace...

Is the starter dead? solenoid only or all of it?
Anything else to think of?
Am I right that all brown wires with big ring connector go on the same big stud with the battery +
and I've got a big spade brown/red fat wire and a small spade red/white wire.
Does it earth on the flywheel housing?
Please any advice is much appreciated!!!!

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? none

If you want to check for a bad earth for the block, just run a jumper cable from block to a good looking bolt or right round to the battery.

As for the starter. You have one of those ones with the piggyback solenoid right? I have little to no idea how they work, if you wanted to check its doing what it should you should bust out a wiring diagram and test the starter on the bench, maybe lube it up with some diesel.

But I'd try jumper cables to see if there's earth issues. Although, you said sometimes everything dies, so maybe check the battery connects from back to front and from negative to floor (could be frayed to all hell).

Thanks for the above, but:

Can anyone tell me the earthing points for the engine bay? I know there are two earth straps (short and longer) but where they go is a mystery fot it was a rough project to start with.

I have the pre engaged type starter with solenoid on top of it.

How do you identify a faulty starter?

Cheers fellas
