The twist choke in my '80 mini thou has started to drop back in of its own accord. I'm going to replace it but was wondering if:

a) The older twist to lock or newer ratchet type is the more reliable type.
b) Both of the ones im looking at are 31 inch but will the ratchet fit in the same dash panel hole as the twist type.

Cheers

should do as later minis (like my 1990 cooper) came fitted with them

mine failed after about 10 years and i now have the early type fitted (not sure why)

No, the ratchet type cable fits through a larger, D shaped hole compared with the original smaller round one for the standard push-pull cable. You will need a new switch panel bracket and to either replace or modify the switch panel itself if you want to fit the ratchet cable.

The quality of new replacement choke cables is quite shocking; I got fed up of buying and fitting new ones each time. So in the end I resorted to using a wooden clothes peg to hold the choke out instead.

Mrs Pooky 'pimped' my peg as a Christmas present! Painted it red with racing stripes  added 12bhp on warm up!

I've used a bowden cable, might've been pinched from a Sherpa, not sure it's been a while. Worked very well.

Couldn't resist a Google, there are plenty of cheap bowden cables on fleabay for radio controlled models, suppose you could have a go at doctoring one on to the end of a choke knob.

Twist will fit into the ratchet hole but not the other way round,

Ah but how sad is this. I have the choke set so when its fully out the choke is full open on the carb for first starting. Then I have the choke set with the thickness of the peg for the engine to tick over just above 1k with the choke out. Then finally without peg, choke full closed/off.

So it’s basically choke out, started, choke in with peg holding it out, once warmed up remove peg.

The added bonus is the peg is also used to stop the heater from rattling lol.

Hehe , didn't get a chance to reply until tonight but thanks for all the info.

Funnily enough i am using a double peg setup at the moment :P Recently fitted a pieced together stage 1 and have yet to get it RR'd so im using the choke a bit more than usual to keep it happy.

Will let you know what i end up with.

MrS
