Can anyone tell me how many Cooper S Sport 5s were ever built or how to find out?? I've owned mine since '97 when I bought it from John Cooper's. It's no. 002 and was their demo car and featured in many magazines and even made a brief appearance in Top Gear!!

Hi
Cannot answer you question, sorry. But i wondered how the gearbox is in the sport 5, and if it is still possible to buy it? Is the gearbox and the extra power the only difference from the standard Mini Cooper MPI?

Is this yours ?

The gearbox is the Jack Knight 5 speed one. Generally good though have had to have it rebuilt at 53,000mls as 5th gear became unselectable. Don't know if still available. The other extras were 4 pot calipers front, minifins at rear, all leather interior, stainless door handles etc.

Mine's the purple one P11 EWW being built I guess, at the back of the garage in the first part of the film.

One of the ex-John Cooper Garages employees bought up all the remaining parts some years ago. His business is called Classic Minis - this is the web address but it's currently down. He may have records as well - worth a try??

I test drove a Sport 5 at John Cooper Garages and even put m,y name down for one of the last they produced but in the end I didn't get one I got a Downton Sport Touring with 5 Speed box instead as it was the same spec and money but a little bit different

I do not think anyone will ever know. I have been interested in John Cooper S conversions having a very early one myself (Jan 1991). Having done a small amount of research I understand all the records were destroyed when John Cooper Garages closed. There were rumours that an ex-employee, Mike Raven, who set up Classic Minis mentioned above, had taken the records but that apparently is not true. He has now gone out of business.

Classic Mini John Cooper Conversions on Facebook might be a way of finding other Cooper S Sport 5 owners.

https://www.facebook...ns/366843933693

That site was aimed initially at the 998 S conversions but seems to have expanded its scope.
