my shell I'm gradually building up is 1275 on log book V5 so thinking i'd do everything correctly sent off log book with my 998 engine number and change occ obviously.

Recieved a letter back from dvla saying they wanted a reciept or proof that the engine is 998 from a garage that fitted it which i dont have as bought they engine privately.
Obviously shows what they know as the engine number denotes the cc.

Wondered if anyone else has had similar problems as i'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do or leave it at 1275 as they have returned log book in my name.

Written evidence can be:

•a receipt for the replacement engine
•written evidence from the manufacturer
•an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
•written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

From DVLA site

i had the same problem trying to change over my clubman from a 998 to a 1275 they sent me the same letter saying the same as what you said and i did not reply to them so they sent another one saying they need to no befor they would send out a log book but i fogot all about it and then about a week or so later they sent the logbook back to me with the right engine number on it. but sorry i can't really help you as to how to get round it i think i was just lucky

It would be easy enough to pop to a garage, pay them £20 to write a letter saying they have examined the engine and it is a 998 unit, engine number is blah blah, and just send that off. So long as you have the engine number on the block it should be fine.

All DVLA want is paperwork - something in writing they can close off and file away

Yes its going that way now but its not like they are asking for alot, they could make it more difficult if they wanted to, all they want is something on headed paper from a garage that has looked at the car or engine, they don't need war and peace on it just the details they want, normally engine size, engine number and type of fuel used

How would the DVLA like a car going to be registered (no docs) without an engine number???

Kam's right - for any engine size they just need a letter that says "it's a different size" from a recognised garage - my MOT man did mine. send it orf, job done. worked for my engine change, even though the bloke wrote "the engine appears to be changed to a 1.4 K series." ... :)

it's really very easy

if you're changing tax class then you have to do it in person at a DVLA office. You're not, so you dont have to. Still need a letter for that as well though.

Tried to change mine from 998 to 1380 just by putting in on the log book with change of ownership. They replied saying its not a common engine size and they want written proof. I have not got back to them, whats the need?

^^^ if you're asking what's the need to inform the DVLA, then its because the insurance is void if the car is incorrectly registered (even if it's a 1380 on the insurance). As far as the law is concerned, you're driving about in a 998 mini. If you crash with a 1380 in, insurance is void and you're possibly up for fraud, plus having to pay out of your own pocket for any costs. The insurance conmpamy will walk away, and "I didn't know" isn't a valid excuse. If you're not asking that then never mind

Cor did not know it was so important, everything is declared on my insurance ( renewal is on saturday  kerching!) Will get it sorted asap, I have the reciept for the engine but it says 1400cc as its from minisport, thats what they call a 1380 which I rekon is mis-leading but I digress, what should I do about that?

the reciept from minispares is OK to include or to show the garage so they know what size the engine is , but you still probably need a letter from a garage to confirm the engine number is different (which I assume it is). Could always give DVLA a call if you fancy a phone challenge

I'd go for sending the minispares reciept and a letter from a garage - covered both ways then :P
