Hi guys,
I have a 1995 Cooper, and the drivers door wont stay open on the "stay".
Ive got the entire dash off, and door cards, and looking at the passenger side, when the door is open it looks like there is a round rubber / cork like thing which moves in and out and engages to help the door stay open..
On the drivers side the cork thing seems to be surrounded by a metal plate - which looks like it has come off from inside the door - hard to tell as you simply cant see inside the door.
Is this a case of door off and replace the hinge?
I dont know anything about doors or hinges or anything like that - I like to work from pictures - but this part isnt mentioned in the Haynes guide nor anywhere else in my searches!
Thanks!

Not too hard to replace. All the mechanism is located above the lower dash rail (no need to remove door cards). You'll need to remove is the dash trim around the air vents and that covers the bulkhead (you might need to pull part of your door seal away to do this) and you should see the fat end of the checkstrap (the part you've linked to on Mini Spares). This passes through a small slit in the A pillar and then the two prongs grip over when the door is fully open, chances are one of them has broken.
To change for a new one you should just need to remove the split pin from the clevis pin where the check strap attaches to the front edge of the door. Pull the old check strap out from within the car and replace with the new one, don't forget the clevis pin and a nice new split pin

It was easy to remove / replace the door stay - BUT my problems ran deeper than I thought.
It looks like the metal plate which looks like it comes from inside the door pillar has come away from the door, and is stuck on the stay.. See pic.
I guess im going to have to get a new one welded in - although I have no experience of such metal work I have no idea where to even begin that journey!
