I have noticed that the exhaust manifold sits about 0.5” from the solid metal fuel line since fitting the stage one kit to my Mini, and I was wondering how much of a problem this is especially on a long journey where the engine can get quite hot?

I was thinking of re-routing the fuel line but there are limited options. Either straight out from the mechanical fuel pump lower down under the three pipes at the top of the manifold, or up and over on the n/s away from the exhaust manifold and back under the carb.

I could re-use the existing rigid metal pipe or just replace it as I have some new unused rubber fuel pipe and kunifer fuel pipe lying around. However there is nothing to secure any pipes to anything.

Any suggestions?

For safety reasons it is always best to change to an electric pump which is well away from the hot exhaust system.

Hmmm. I have often thought about doing this so I could route the fuel pipe well away from the manifold. I have got an SU electric fuel pump sat in the shed, would this be ok to use? (Sorry for the highjack)

As long as the power is fairly reasonable, I would have to check, or maybe some else could answer....... but I think the Cooper S of the 60'2 had the same SU electric pump and that was good enough for 79bhp )

Did the car have this fitted after ofr before its last MOT? An MOT inspector might have something to say if its too close, its really hard to be critical unless someone else sees it. Consider that if the line were to fracture, would any spill on the manifold? Best to get someone to advise on this by looking at the car if you are unsure.

Years ago i got home from work parked up got out and heard a strange sizzling sound coming from under the bonnet.

Upon removal of said bonnet i found that the source of the sizzling sound was a cracked fuel pipe going into the carb dripping petrol onto a hot exhaust manifold - i ran.

Remeber that if the fuel line fractures, the worst case should always be that it doesnt drip on a hot exhaust...for obvious reasons.

I'll re-route the fuel line as best as I can, however the fuel pump is on one side of the exhaust and the fuel pipe inlet to the carb is on the other so some part of the pipe will always be over the exhaust, even if it is higher up.

Just a thought but how about fitting heat shields around the exhaust?

The way I’ve always used to get round this. Is to bend either the old or a new section of solid fuel pipe so it comes off the fuel pump, runs along the bulkhead to upper engine steady, then up the side of it to the carb, Held firmly in place by 2 cable ties.

I’ll see if I’ve got any picks of what I mean.

Yep bend the pipe away from the fanimold and then run rubber pipe up around the air filter to the other side!
