howdy people!
i'v been given an assignment on automatic transmissions which is quite apprioriate when i drive an auto mini! i have to do a 20 page hand written report on auto trans (not good when peeing on dry sand would be more legible!)
my main problem is that when i'v got the computer to look at i would much rather be looking at anything else but automatic transmissions!! anyone got any ways for me to stop looking at anything else!!??(or a 20 page report on automatic transmissions......!!!)

The Auto-box one sounds good. The box on a Mini or Ausin are not a very good design but very old. Most creap to much.I have had and have many Autos.Have a look at the old BMW autos they drive great. Also check out Porshe autos and even new Tractors they are real high tec. and fast.We have one that is all computer controlled and can work on its own by satalite.I was a shock to see it.The whole of my Family are car mad.my interests are on Classics.Just sold friday a Mint Classic almost 190 Merc. good enough to win a show.Went on Bay for only £900.Sad but peoples money is low so are most car values. We had just spent £250 plus at merc. dealers on itto still get the right stamp in the book and a new MOT for the new owner. We sell them in good condition that one at quite a loss.We all know its good to buy but very hard to sell these days but it is just a hobby to try other cars at my age.Bought the next car first and a bargain so worked out ok.Only got £950 for its private plate when the true value was £1500 min.Money is so tight these days for most.Have a tidy Audi 2ltr with good electric hood looks well flash and just had a hand made full Leather cream interior fitted and door panels even the Consol.Nice blue low miles. The insurance is very high so no one has even bought it cheap,no rust.Long MOT only want £1200 no one has made an offer when on bay.Bad news.It does not come under classic to insure so at any age it costs on the road.the small cars are a better bet.many have said they would like it and its good on fuel.I really liked my blender a quite rare Audi V6 2.6 Coupe it looked like a slow car with the badges off.No Chav bothered it.150 mph+ down hill. 146 on the flat.Good on fuel to.Kept it a year.Insurance fees again shocking. Some cars even at my age cost on insurance. At least the minis are not to bad for most but not fair on any car for you younger drivers.Insurace does fit in with your Auto details. They know with any Auto car you should be more mature minded and they make driving a more relaxed drive. You can think more about the road. The more bits and bobs you add to this will make it more fun.Good luck.Mother had the old Austin 1300cc Auto in the old days, she loved it.Rarther like your Mini box.I am sure you have mastered the drive wallop when clicking in.Some pay more for an Auto car thats why i have added a bit much to your topic. At least i have given you a rest from diagrams.Your Research must be a bit much.I would not try building any Auto box.Building a Straight cut Mini manuel box did my head in and the cost.Never again. The drive parts were an insane fee.It worked well. That full Race lump went in my rare mini based Hollier road and green lane 1978 car.Rear mounted lump. One of the members found it as a wreck without that Engine in it.Someone will buy it of them and restore it a large cost the guy only made six by hand.Mine had the very rare gull wing doors to.Only a couple had them and also hand made.

I made a mistake it was not an S. it was a DAF i think not sure so long ago,the design was invented for trucks first then they made a car but not many liked it.An ugly shape and they rotted fast. They drove well only slow cars.I like Autos you can enjoy the road more and no gears to bother thinking about so more of a relaxing drive if you have a good design and only use one foot, many early ones had the jurk putting in drive and would move forward on tick over. That put many off in the old days.I had a Ford Granada Auto and that had a good box.The BMW was a much better Auto,my jag Auto was also good design but loved fuel in two tanks. The Pag. Jap. import 4x4 swb 2.6 Turbo had a very high t. Auto box very good to drive.Could switch to two wheel drive,on road, off road etc.A good box to look at.Another Auto Classic is the Porsche 924 box, very strong design three speed. You have got a taste for Autos. When older they are easier to drive well to.Your study is a good one, more will want an Auto in the Future to so it could lead to a good job if you wanted it.

Daf were the first car manufacturer to bring CVT to market. I remember being fascinated by this as a schoolboy back in the late 60s. See here:

http://antholonet.co...rs/DAF/daf.html

and here

http://en.wikipedia....le_transmission

And just to bring the subject back to Minis: One of Issigonis's pet projects in the mid 70s was a "gearless" Mini. He designed and drove such a car as his own personal transport. The car is now in the Gaydon Motor Museum. It's hard to find much in the way of detail about how it worked, but the following is quoted from Issigonis the Official Biography:

"It had no clutch, no gearbox and no variable ratio drive mechanism. Instead it used a torque converter. This eliminated the need for gear changing, making it easier to drive. Issigonis argued that it would be much easier to service than a geared car, first because it was made up of a much smaller number of parts and second because there was no gearbox to become damaged by misuse."

Interestingly, just prior to his death Issigonis predicted that the Mini of the future would have a form of CVT transmission - just as the current Binis do.

Good luck with your assignment! And, as a tech. college lecturer myself, I don't recommend too much cutting and pasting. :(
