My driveshaft falls out of the pot joint.

Posted Image

You can kind of see in that picture.

I have metro turbo 4 pot brakes on it, with the metro hubs.
Although have done around 700 miles with it like this, including a track day.

Why is it doing this? my tiebar locking nut recently came loose and came out of adjustment, I havn't adjusted it back yet, could this be the reason?

Edit: I have those stupid quick release engine mounts aswell, maybe the engine has moved to one side?

Anyone got measurements of where the engine is meant to sit?

The pot joint inner is coming out of the pot joint outer, I would say this is the cause of your tie bar nut coming undone due to vibration.......

There can only be a few reasons why your sliding Birfield joint is coming apart......

1) the drive shaft is too short.
2) the inner clips are missing off the driveshaft allowing the joint to slide to far on to the shaft.
3) you have altered your suspension geometry ..... a lot.
4) your engine mounts have failed and your engine has moved over.

? I can't quite see in the picture

Yes that is not a good sign then :D

In that case I would have a very carefull look at the whole system.... and definately do NOT drive until fixed.

Did I read in your project thread you fitted another driveshaft that you had? Maybe it was from the wrong side, as they're different lengths?

Yeah it was doing it before, so I swapped it for another driveshaft I had, put them together and they were the same length.

I have altered my geomety alot but it has been like that for 700 odd miles like I said.

I think the engine might have moved, i'll jack it up and see if it has, maybe add another steady to try hold it in place if it has moved.

I adjusted the tiebar back to where it was before and did up the lock nut properly, it's still doing it, so as the geometry is the same as it's been before without the problem.

So the only thing I can think of is the engine has moved in the subframe.

Fitted a small steady to try and push the engine over a little.
I reduced the camber, and increased the ride height a little which brings the hubs into the centre of the car a little and it's staying in for now.

I think it's a combination of the crap engine mounts, and the increased track of the metro hubs.

It's not advisable unless you have a fully adjustable suspension which can be tuned to the alterations which the metro hubs require.

As long as the balls ate 1/2 way in the pot (i.e. only 1/2 of each ball is visible) and they never get any further out then it shouldn't be a problem.

The driveshaft length dosen't alter that much (if you see what I mean) and the photo shown may be at the maximum, that is to say that from this point the length may only get shorter no matter which way the suspention goes; impossible to say from tha photo.

Well its satying in now. I'll fit proper engine mounts back in and see how it fairs when I lower it back down and increase the negative camber.

That picture by the way was taken at around half lock. All of the balls where hanging out of the pot.
