right ive decided im going down the bmw bike head route next year, thursday night i were in a bad mood so decided to stay out the way of friends and family, so shut myself in the shed and pulled an engine to bits, and finally made the decision. I ordered the template thing for the block face today, and am trying to source a head at the mo, but i have a few questions though before i start that need answering pwetty please *flutters eyelids*

1. I understand i need to blank the original head stud holes off in order to drill new ones for the bmw head, whats he best way of doing so? Screwing in some studding (with threadlock on), then cutting the studding nearly flush with the block, milling the block so the studding is flat, then doing the neccesary machining to the block face?

2. Correct me if im wrong but ill need to go dry deck, if so, how do i go about doing this?

3. I have a set of yamaha r1 carbs in the shed, will these be ok for it, i know obviously ill need to make a manifold, or would i be better off going fuel injection, such as omex?

4. Specialist components have a smaller alternator that they sell on their site, in my opinion its way too expensive for an alternator, is there a cheaper alternative?

6. I have a crankshaft that has been stroked 84mm, lightened and balanced, along with cooper 's' rods that have been modified as was neccessary, would i be able to use this crank or would i be better off standard stroke?

5. Whats the general opinion on this mod?

Many thanks if you can help :D

your best to look for taperd plugs to go into the block, tighter fit n such

you dont need to go dry deck if i remember but its usualy benificial anyway, you do it by not drilling new water ways into the block for the water to pass thought. Then you have to get a boss welded to the head to allow water to pass in, water exits the block from one of the end core plug drillings with a boss bolted in place. then you get a U shaped hose to connect the 2.

I know alex crosse went to the scrappy's n just searched for a nippon denso alternator so try that perhaps, might require sevral journeys to make sure once uv spotted one do some research to make sure the alternator outputs sufficient

oh and if your going through all the hassle of fitting the k1100 IMO it would be maddness to not then also go injection :D

i'm planning the same conversion and i've read the specialist components guide, i would recomend it for the information it has.... for drydecking, its not essential but helps, you will need to plug the water ways too on both head and block. the water suply is fed from 1 to the other by way of an external u-pipe.... i google the conversion and a few projects came up that helped me understand the conversion more...

as regards the carbs yes you will need to make a manifold but should be fine, there are alot of advantages of injection over carb including more control over your engine setup and reliability but personally i prefere carb.... :D

The main advantage of dry decking, is you can use a standard mini (450) head gasket.

but the stud holes are in different places?

ahh i see, makes more sense, next thing i need to do is source a head, which id rather do before i start machining the block. Hopefully the template thing will be delivered fairly soon, so i can see what machining i actually need to do. I think ill try the r1 carbs and see how it goes as well, be nice to be a bit different and seeing as i already have them itll save me having to spend out on injection stuff.

No point spending all that money putting a 8-port head on and then using carbs IMO.

when i blank the holes on my block i'm getting some cast bar threaded with a shoulder at the top, made like a shear bolt. machine the top of the threaded hole in the block out and screw them in. have seen a few plugged up and the top of the block just looks messy around the threads.
