Hey,

Im going to be fitting a fiber glass front end soon and was wondering about the side repeaters.

If possible (read legal) id like to run without them (the car is an 88 designer imported from Ireland) but im guessing it wont be legal. does anyone know for sure?

I was wondering if anyone had done anything a bit different with theirs to clean up the line of the car so to speak and have them hidden.
I would quite like to see what people have done, or hear any idea's :D

If anyone knows, or knows where i could find the legislation which defines a correctly located and functioning side repeater that would be great :D

Thanks

Chris

Definitely not legal as far as I'm aware. Couldn't tell you from what year they are though. I've seen them fitted to A panels, but they look a bit gay IMO. Just fit them in the standard position, they really don't look that bad.

Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations, 1989, Schedule 7 (direction indicators).

Technically these regs don't apply to a 1988 car obviously but the 1984 regulations aren't online and the technical details are the same. A side repeater is referred to as a class 5 indicator in the regulations. They are required on all cars registered after the 1st of April 1986. There are requirements for position and angle of visibility and before you try to hide it, remember it's there to stop people crashing into you.

this is interesting...

Seems to imply that your indicator does not need to be visable directly from the side between the front and side repeaters :D :D
surely thats the most vunerable area when at a junction....

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side. Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens.

Note: At least 50% of light sources in a lamp must illuminate and at least 50% of a lamp must be visible from the front, rear or side as appropriate

My 86 car has no repeaters, due to a wing change in the past, but I'm about to get it MOT'd so have decided to play safe and add them.

Instead of the usual square ones I have bought 40mm round ones from Auto Electric Supplies and will mount them further forward than standard like an Innocenti.
