Does a facet fuel pump have to be fitted in the boot close to the tank or can it be fitted under the bonnet on the bulkhead (preffered locatioin). It is a silver top cylinder type.

Yes, you can fit it anywhere you like.... it just won't work correctly

These pumps need free flowing fuel to be gravity fed in to the inlet pipe of the pump otherwise it will burn it out.... it should be under the fuel tank and NOT in the boot.... if you run ou tof fuel or hit a sharp corner etc the pump loses flow and your engine dies.... your pump runs dry and will quickly fail.

The second picture shows the pump in a horizontal attitude.... it is advised that you have the inlet side lower than the outlet side... ie at an angle.

I stuck my cheapo electric fuel pump on the foot floor (inside) on some rubber exhaust bushes. Seems to work fine for me.

Yes it will work, it's just the fitting instructions and the recognised fitting methods say fit under the tank and at angle.

It is all about trying to maintain flow... whilst maintaining some reliability.

I always mount Facit pumps under the rear seat horizontal panel near where the old electric pump used to go. That way they are gravity fed, in a safe location and work well. I fit 2 to some cars to ensure reliability, side-by-side in parallel and wired separately. This is on rally cars and underneath them I fit a 3 mm aluminium shield plate, On road cars I just fit one pump, but in the same location. Whether you use rubber mountings is up to you. They are not strictly necessary, but if you don't, the pump can just about be heard working, although the noise is not intrusive.

Could you mount one under the rear seat inside the car? or does it need to be directly under the tank?

Not advisable as one thing you don't want is fuel/fuel lines with joins inside the passenger area. It used to be done on early competition Minis, but was ruled 'unsafe' and banned by the RACMSA after a couple of instances where pump outlet pipes came loose and neat petrol was pumped onto the floor. Under the seat panel inside the rear sub-frame near the base of the tank is really ideal.

Is this also true for the red top pumps, or just the solid state ones?

The original question was for a silver top cylinder type similar to your red top so I assume it does but it would be good if someone could clarify

I've always assumed that all Facit pumps need to be below tank level and I always fit them under the rear seat horizontal panel at the LH side adjacent to the sub-frame side. It is then easy to run the feed pipe from the bottom of the tank through the boot floor.
