1988, 998 mayfair, standard exhaust and manifold
any tips on how to get a good seal between the flange on the exhaust and manifold? the clamp is pretty rubbish really, and I've used gungum exhaust fitting paste but still can't get a gas tight seal after 3 attempts
will have another go tomorrow, thought welcome

I had no end of problems with that seal, I would finally manage to get a decent seal but then it would be blowing again in a matter of days. Main problem appeared to be the joint working loose due to engine movement caused by the top engine steady bushes being worn. I found that new engine bushes solved the problem temporarily, but it was soon back again once the bushes started to wear a little. An uprated "competition" set of bushes then lasted a bit longer than the standard replacement items, but I didn't ever eradicate the problem completely until I did away with the joint completely by fitting an LCB!!

get some proper exhaust assembley paste in the tub not the tube, clean all the cack off the exhaust and manifold check the exhaust for damage and clean the clamp
making sure you have the correct one for a 998 or 1300.
now smear the joint with exhaust paste
put a jack under the exhaust and push up onto the manifold at this point when alined do up the gearbox mount tight!!
now get the exhaust clamp, the two bolt one is better if you can get it, and put a slight smear of paste on this too. fit clamp and do up tight making sure no paste gets onto the threads of the bolts if you can help it. start up and run till hot.
remove jack from under exhaust and you should be all fine.

thanks for the above, I used the jack the last time and inspected the fit as best I could before fitting the clamp (single bolt type). It's not an issue of wear or working loose, there's no seal right from the first start up. I'll try changing the paste for a different type but I've used this stuff many times without problem.
I'm wondering if the flanges simply don't sit flush and the cr4p clamp can't take away the twist
cheers

I hate suggesting it as it just sounds bodgy, but have you thought about silicone? It will not burn off and sticks perhaps too well- whilst remaining flexible.

sorry to hi-jack the thread, but i am having trouble sealing my exhaust at the join between the main straight pipe and the bend from the y piece (next to the gear box). i have used paste and holzt gum, with no joy! i saw some exhaust bandage in halfords? would that work?
