Hey guys, Im interested in the z cars kit however im unsure on a few things :S

If I were to get a tax exempt mini and install the race spec kit into it would it still be tax exempt and what would I declare to teh DVLA - just hte new engine? Or would I have to specify the car has been spaceframed and is now rwd?

Same again with insurance - if I said to them "it has a race spec z cars kit" would they know what I was talking about or would I have to go indepth as to the specific modifications - obviously I wouldnt go ringing someone like direct line and would contact a modified car insurance company.

Thanks :)

Craig

You should declare it to the DVLA.

The modifications will require an SVA (or IVA cannot remember) test. This will more then likely end up with it being Q Plated as there isn't enough of the original car to determine its age and keep the original registration. If you use all new components such as new shell etc and prove you have via invoices, i think you can avoid a Q.

When getting insurance, quite a few of them do know what a Z-Cars is. But to them its a kit car, and from my experience of insuring kit cars (which i haven't done in about 3 years) they just want to know the Engine & its Size, Value and expected BHP to give you a quote. If you want an agreed value you'll need to send photos in.

so if I get a tax exempt mini shell, and buy a zcars kit brand new from them then it should avoid a q plate? I've never had any experiance with tax exemptions or declarations before so its all new to me

If you buy a tax exempt car it will have been made Pre 72... making it not new and buying a new z-cars kit wont keep its Tax exemption. This is because there are not enough of the original mini (read shell, subframes, steering rack etc) to keep its current pre 72 plate.

This being said, quite a large number people don't even bother putting it through any of these tests, just an MOT and off they go.

Yes, but you are effectively driving around illegally. I know a lot of people do this without any problems, but to spend so much money on a car and not SVA it... personally seems a bit crazy. More info can be found here; http://www.the-ace.org.uk/
