Model: mini 998 not sure on model
Year: 1989
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

my friends mini wont engage gears. it starts and runs fine but if you put it into a gear it will slightly try to pull forward but then make a sort of slipping noise and just rev.
it does this in all gears.
as in you can turn the car off put it into a gear then put the clutch down, turn the car on and when you try to pull away you will feel it bite a tiny bit then it will just rev and not move.
i thought it was just a completly worn out clutch so we purchased the correct clutch and took it to a garage but they have now said it wasnt the clutch its teh gear box and we should go get our money back for the clutch.

i wasnt in the car when it happened but apparently my freind was going accelerating between 50 and 60 then the car just kind of died. but then once he stopped he could turn the engine on and its runs fine but cant go forward.

soooo

do we think its the clutch or the gearbox?

cheers

sounds like there is a problem with the clutch. Check the adjustment on the throwout nuts. That's the big nuts that stick out of the end of the clutch casing.

remove the sump plug and check for debris...... don't forget to block the hole whilr you do this as all your oil will leak out >_< if you can take a photo and post it up here (the sump plug that is)

Another way is to remove the flywheel and try to turn the primary gear (use the clutch plate to do this) if the car is in gear then it will move forwards if the gearbox is ok....

Just a thought, beofre doing any of this put it in gear and have a friend or two watch the hub nuts from the side to see if they are turning..... if they are then its a new drive flange and CV joint

DO NOT FORGET THAT IT COULD SUDDENLY LEAP FORWARD AND CAUSE A POTENTIALLY LETHAL ACCIDENT..

cheers mra ill take a look at it next time im at my mates house.
am i correct in thinking if its just the clutch i wont be able to put it into a gear with the engine running even with the clutch down as its clearly doing slim to nothing?

A slipping clutch has nothing to do with gear engagement.... if the gearbox is ok then there should be no reason to stop you from engaging gears, however you simply will not have any drive...................

Why did the garage say that you didn't need a clutch ? they must havee had a good reason ??

If you select gear and engage the clutch.... but don't go any where, do you get a speedo reading ?

the garage was my mates friend and to be honest i think he just couldn't be bothered to do it as he hadn't done a mini before.

im pretty sure the speedo didnt move when it revved in gear but not 100% certain.

i didnt take a look at the cv joint but i will next time in near the car.

cheers for all your help mra
