Hi all,

I gor some skin pins on fleabay and did some fabrication today

Posted Image

the tape is holding it in place because I just cant get the skin pins to hold it in place. I know they are simple things but can I get them to hold it, no !!!

What am I doing wrong as the piece just slips out of place.

Thanks,

Graham

It might be a little easier to tell if you added a photo of the pins in use :P

Monogram pins, used to use these on the aircraft when I was doing my apprenticeship :P

Quite right needs to be an overlap, both panels should be flat to each other and a small hole depending on the type and size of pins used.

Can't say I ever seen them.... however on the Mini body work sometimes a simple tack weld does the job..... I am probably about to get hung drawn and quartered by the body work purists :P lol

I did see someone using cable ties..... as he stitch welded along the panel they melted away thus leaving the parts to be welded in place and nothing else in the way

Melting plastic can be hot and the fumes could be dangerous if inhaled.

If they are for overlapped joints then that may well be where I am going wrong. As you can see in my pic I was truing to set them for a butt weld, but as I said they would not tighten up to hold the repair section.

Yep they can only be used for overlapping joints. As previously mentioned you ideally need 'intergrips' for butt joints(other methods can be used too though). They are about £14 for 5 from ebay or frost. :P

Ok skin pins for that particular job are no good as they are for over lapping joints or panel to panel ie flange to flange. Intergrips for butt welding is what you would normally use however because you are just adding a small repair piece in that corner of the scuttle then they are not really suitable as unless they are very tight the panel will move.

If though you were to clamp in place the wing and A panel to make sure the repair section fits and matches the contour you could use them then as the panel should not move.

To be honest as previously mentioned i would go the tack weld route, just a couple then offer the wing up and A panel to ensure gaps height etc is right then add a few more tacks to make sure its really secure then remove the wing and A panel and seam weld the repair.

If you were to do repair sections in the floor panels then intergrips will be ideal.

Hope this helps

Neil
