let us know what amp & subs you got.

if it's minor dimming, sometimes a decent cap next to the amp will help.

for serious problems/dimming, including poor starting next day, then alternator upgrade is what i'd recommend.

They DO work if you're cabling is decent...up to a point. Some noobs will wire their systems with any old bits of wiring, i suggested a cap as a cheap first step (these can be had now for around £20 rather than investing in a relatively expensive, high power alternator).
Assuming you're not a noob, you'd have done the the main supply in minimum of 8 guage, checked all connections for <1 ohm resistance (closer to 0 as possible) or ask someone who knows about Installations (NOT a Halfords 'kid')

If you still have the space in the boot then fit a second battery with a split charge system so your main battery is used to start the car but when its running your running the car & sounds off two batteries. Or alternatively (if you can afford it) get a bigger single battery like the OPTIMA RED TOP with 800CCA @ 0 degrees you should have all the power you need.

Yes the engine is running when this happens and i was tempted to cut and weld another battery box in and get another 306 battery and link it somehow

David.
