Best to get some proper panel wipe stuff.

You should use a 'tack rag' to pick up and remove any dust from the panel and then use panel wipe to remove an grease and other contaminants.

Have a look on ebay, its all on there. Other wise you could try a local paint supplier or bodyshop.

Heres some. Cheap enough for the amount: Link

If you can't wait for postage, halfords sell panel wipes, but they're pretty expencive - About £3-5 for 5 wipes. I've used them for spraying small bits like my mirrors and wheels, but they won't go far on a full car.

The downfall about whitespirit or similar is that it can leave abit of a film behind

DO NOT use white spirit it does leave a film, if you cannot find panel wipe locally then try google and look for local car paint suppliers. Most of them will be able to supply it.
Found this online http://www.paints4trade.com

You could use cellulose thinners or similar.

I use this company http://www.granvillesupplies.co.uk/
