Have you checked the thermostat ?????

Could also be the coolant needs replacing, aftter flushing the system.

I'd try these first. Sensor is more awkward to replace

could be a few things! when mine went the wire in the actual gauge had broken and just needed soldering back into place! other things could be the sensor, a break in the wires to the gauge or the sensor or even the printed circuit on the back of the gauge cluster could be faulty! if you have a multi meter it makes things a lot easier for you to determine what is what!!

i dont see how the coolant need changing or the thermostat can make a gauge not work! if it was overheating then check them, but not for a gauge not working!

If the gauge is not reading at all it is most likely the temperature transmitter (sensor):

On your car, this screws into the cylinder head. Check to see that the wiring has not become loose or detached; otherwise the part is not expensive and quite easy to replace.

its actually located on the underside of the inlet manifold and you can only really get to it from underneath

Wo ! Wo! Wo!.

Just hold up here a minute, before you start diving in. So you've got a car that's not coming up to temperature (or the temperature gauge is broken which is possible but unlikely) at the same time as this.

Hi i have a 94 mini cooper and was wondering what this prob is i have little slatters of oil coming at the back, i have been told it mite be valve rubbers? what another head that i have work if it has a good valve rubbers?

Oh and also

Hi i was driving today and my car just started reving loads i was wondering if anyone knew what this could be my car is a 94 mini cooper. I no there is a sensor or somthing under the pedal is it that? does anyone no what parts i need?

Now these may be three seperate issues (But my guess is they may all be related).

It seems to me you need to get this car on a diagnostics test and find out what's working and what's not. Your problems may be linked to one or more sensors.

Some of the symptoms you are seeing seem to be related to the car not coming up to temperature. If this is true the temperature gauge will obviously read low, the ECU will constantly run in start up mode giving a high idle speed and run rich. You can only prove this by getting it on a proper engine diagnostic test.

If you decide to do this Check with whoever that they have the right kit to test a Rover Mini SPI. The system was different to modern engine management systems and not everyone still has the kit to check it out.

I will do thanks mate

And .... what to look for in the wiring? what color is it and where does it go to or come from?

Mine works intermitently, it will work fine and just drop while driving

Thanks, Peter in the USA

Peter,

The first thing I would say is to get the car hooked up to the correct diagnostic tool. I appreciate this may not be too easy in the States but is the best starting place if you can. It will save you time and possibly money. Then post the readings here. These problems are best diagnosed systematically, otherwise we may just be stabbing in the dark.

Are there any other things happening ??

How frequently does the temperature gauge go intermitent. ?
Is the electric fan kicking in and does this coincide with the change in the temperatiure gauge ??
What revs does the car idle at
1) When Cold
2) When up to temperature
3) When the temperature gauge goes intermittent

Here's a link to a very detailed technical explaination of how everything works. It may be useful, but use it wisely. Don't just jump to conclusions without some evidence.

SPI Coolant temperature Sensor or is it ????

Thanks, a very informative post. Fooled with the wires yesterday to make sure that there were no faulty grounds, this morning it warmed up well and drove to work with the readings in the normal, (just below the black line!) so I will watch it for now, if it starts up again, I'll tackle the thermostat.
