Also...
Instead of allowing coolant to flow between the block and the cylinder head, all the waterways are blocked off and a hose is run externally between the block and head, all the coolant flows via this hose eliminating the possibility of oil and water mixing.
This is a fairly popular mod amongst the race cars

Benefits are better heat distribution and, potentially, less disastrous head gasket failures - if you do a thorough job of blocking off the old waterways.

There are also cooling benefits as it promotes better water flow around cylinder 4.
I just wanted the cooling benefit, so I only blocked the waterways in the block, which can be done easily. There's some info here CLICKY

Urrrm....blows across 2 cylinders pretty much ruins the compression on both of those cylinders, other blows can also damage the mating faces and on top of that, there are oil ways, you usually only dry deck the waterways on an A series not oil ways as well!basically if your h/g goes it doesnt matter, the h/g just seals the cylinders
