A quick google revealed this...

*Edit*

Also...

Instead of allowing coolant to flow between the block and the cylinder head, all the waterways are blocked off and a hose is run externally between the block and head, all the coolant flows via this hose eliminating the possibility of oil and water mixing.

This is a fairly popular mod amongst the race cars

The link is to a head swap discussion, where dry decking is essential as the waterways need to be blocked anyway. It can be done on a 5 porter in much the same way and there are kits available.

Benefits are better heat distribution and, potentially, less disastrous head gasket failures - if you do a thorough job of blocking off the old waterways.

I think I've read that people do it on K series engines when they're building them for more power.

basically if your h/g goes it doesnt matter, the h/g just seals the cylinders

As already said it involves blocking the waterways in both the head & block face. This means in the event of a gasket failure no water will get into the cylinders. Obviously this is of benefit on a race car as this will allow you to finish the race.
There are also cooling benefits as it promotes better water flow around cylinder 4.
I just wanted the cooling benefit, so I only blocked the waterways in the block, which can be done easily. There's some info here CLICKY

Urrrm....blows across 2 cylinders pretty much ruins the compression on both of those cylinders, other blows can also damage the mating faces and on top of that, there are oil ways, you usually only dry deck the waterways on an A series not oil ways as well!

what he means is it dosent dump the water and over heat meaning you can finish the last few laps of a race, and avoid a DNF.

I was under the impression that main reason for dry decking was to get around the problem of No.4 cylinder getting hot on race Minis. MED now do a dry deck kit with a special head gasket where you do not need to block the water passages. Clicky - http://www.med-engin...mp;vlang_id=512
