Is it wrong that I read the words "rover 45" and instantly knew it would be a headgasket :)

Thanks for the advice guys.

Just got to let the father in-law know now.

Feel like crap, guy lent me his car while a family friend fixed my mini, now I've messed his car up.

Cheers for the help.

Russ

With the water and oil milky must be the head. Not the end of the world, take it off,get it skimmed new gasket,do a basic de-coke new head bolts and job sorted.Charge him to it is christmas. If the Anti freeze has just been done on a winter service that can do it if to strong mix.Or blame you new steal toe capped boots for being pedal heavy.

it sounds like it could be a head gasket.. have a look under your oil filler cap.. if there is white gunk then its 100% head gasket, taking into account all the other things you have described...

Is it using water?

Is thier smeggy mayo looking stuff in the oil filler cap!

It MAY be the head gasket!

The White Gunk as you call it is Oil & Coolant mix this dose not form stright away inside the engine it takes alot of miles to produce it and also this white gunk can be made by loads of stop start runs eg skool runs so it dosen't always piont towards head gasket.

but by sounds of what you have put it will be the head gasket that has blown, 90% of the time is because people thrash it round above 3000 revs why its still cold and it don't do the head gasket any good this is what pops them.

if you can get hold of a land rover head gasket for the K seires engine they solved the problem (well half of it) with a 2mm ish steel gasket to make the head gasket more stronger this dose reduce the chance of it poping but they can still go.

If it hasn't been said before, check the compressions first, 200psi is what you should be aiming for.

All good advice, the test as said is a top one to do with the pistons on each chamber. With alloy heads with a small warp and when young and cash short i did one on plate glass and loads of sand papper for hours to remove all high spots then polished new gasket and done.had more time than money.

Thanks for all the help. TMF community sometimes has its downfalls, but when I have been in trouble there has always been someone there to talk me through something.

Turns out (family mechanic looking at it) Rover 45 engines go fo £250 for a decentish (if you can call a k-series engine that after this experience) one, and we know a mechanic that will drop it in for us (for free).

Well see who pays, might be joint effort.

Cheers Guys.
