Would I be right in thinking the clutch release bearing has gone on my 2001 mpi, i heard a clunk noise and after that the clutch just wouldnt engage, the car will still go into gear as if the clutch is disengaged, but if lift the clutch pedal up I get a horrible rattling noise. Hoping it's not the gearbox, gonna be expensive as it is, not sure if i want to tackle a clutch on my own.
Thanks for your help

If the CRB has gone you wont be able to dissengage the clutch...
Sounds more like transfer gears to me, clutch plate or transmission.
Something you can try..
Get one of the front wheels off the ground, engine off, stick it in 4th and turn the free wheel, this 'should' turn the engine, if it does not then you're in trouble... also check you have not got a big puddle of oil under the back of the gearbox and the Diff is not hanging out the back... ( common problem with MPi's )
Does it make any noise when in neutral ?

Yes it makes the noise in neutral, i couldnt see any oil when it happened, my dad towed me home and the noise was consistent with the road speed and i had the car in neutral as i was getting towed

In that case it is not the CRB (clutch Release Bearing)........ in neutral with the engine off, this sounds like diff or gearbox for sure

Thanks for your help guys but i diagnosed it today as a dodgy cv joint, the boot was torn and the ball bearings had fallen out of the joint, meaning the drive shaft was just spinning, glad it wasnt anything too serious. Bought a new cv joint and putting it on tommorow.

well done that chap, don't forget to use a flat washer to pull it all together before fitting the split cone washer.
