I'm having an engine built for me with a similar spec to that of an article I read on the minispares website.

http://www.minispare...x?ty=ad&aid=174

I ordered a set of the Hypatec pistons for the 1098 engine (+040 as advised by the engine builder) with hastings rings from minisport australia as the old pistons were damaged due to a crumbled valve seat, but when they have stared fitting these piston I've had a phone call to advise that firstly an Oil control ring is missing and also that they don't think the pistons are much good. as the rings are very tight on the piston, suggesting that if they continue to fit them I may have a smokey engine... Having done a bit more reading up on this it seems the hypatec pistons have a high silicone content meaning that they can/are supposed to be tighter. can anyone confirm that this is the case?

otherwise, they have advised that they can get a set of AE Hepolite pistons for the 1098 for £150 and that these are of very good quality.

I would really like people's opinions on what I should do here, as I have little clue about stuff this deep into the engine, I don't mind getting the other pistons if I'll be better off, but don't want to waste the money if they are only going to be as good or worse than the Hypatecs.

Many thanks.

The Hypatec pistons are meant to be stronger than the AE pistons.
I have installed a set of 998 +120 thou pitons, and the fit with the rings (also Hastings) appeared to be adequate, but of course without seeing your scenario i cannot verify if your fit is ok!

Hastings rings are normally excellent. They do seem to be a bit stiffer than those supplied with standard AE pistons. So long as they 'gap-up' ok, with a fitted circumferencial gap of betweem 0.009" and 0.015" then they should be fine when run-in. Then you need to check the radial depth of the ring and the depth of the ring slot in the piston. Radial clearance needs to be around 0.015" or slightly more. Check the ring thickness and the ring gap width to ensure toe correct vertical fit. Ring to piston slot clearance should be no more than 0.0015" when new.

So let me get this right, the pistons come without rings, so you need to buy a set, the rings bought come without the oil control ring ?

What a crock....

many thanks for your help, this all sounds very promising in favor of the Hypatecs :(

Maybe you should get the facts correct before you go slagging things off.

The Hypatec pistons that Minisport (and many other mini suppliers in Australia sell) do come with a ring set (the pistons and rings are a 'set'). They come with Hastings rings and I have not had an issue with any of the engines I have built using this combination. The rings are not fitted to the pistons when you buy them (like the AE pistons) which allows you to gap the rings correctly without having to first remove them from the pistons.

The fact that there is an oil control ring missing is clearly a mistake which I'm sure the supplier would sort out if they were informed (just like any reputable supplier).

I installed the AE +.040 1098 pistons/rings. Been running for a few years now, some autocrossing ( high rpm ) no problems at all.

Maybe you should re-read my post then...

It was a question... Duh !

I was asking if the pistons came without the rings, if they do come with the rings then fair doo's, but missing the oil control ring was obviously not in the suppliers plans...
