i am nearing the end of my current project and of course i start to look at what i can get my teeth in to next and a z cars mini would be just up my alley i think
but i would like to know who to start it .

if we assume that i get hold of a car and i replace the panels needed i assume that i get the car mocked up with frame, engine pedals wheels etc then take it all apart and paint it

does the car need to go to z cars to have parts fitted or can it all be done at home as i don't live in the uk it would be expensive to ship it forward and backwards

i would be looking to use the car on the road but only during summer and mostly to and from shows and at the weekends which engine would be better mc/car? busa/r1? civic/volvo?

i know that there is a dvd out there that tells alot of how to do it but i thought that talking to someone that has done it and knows what they are talking about would be better

thanks for any advice

michael

Hi Michael

I actually have the DVD (it was free with one of the magazines), which was a pain as i had just bought it. I can send the free one up to you if you like?!

However i think your biggest problem is SFRO ("the national swedish car builders association", that's a bad translation) as they limit 20bhp per 100kg for modified/ amateur built cars. However I emailed my friendly Sfro representative for Skåne (he deals with hot rods, so he seemed more flexible) He was impressed with the promotive bike set up and said that he would allow that through the test; so it really depends who you speak too. I know there has been a r1 rear wheel drive mini bouncing around blocket here for around a year still with no MOT equivalent.

At the same time I cant really get my head around the rules, especially when you See volvo PV /Amazons with huge V8 etc

SFRO also state that if a car is imported it must arrive un modified in terms of the engine, drivetrain etc. So to have Z cars build the car for you could be problematic. I did however wonder, are the z cars mins registerd on a "Q" plate? maybe that is a loop hole?

Another loophole is to import a modified car as personal belongings, but i am a bit sceptical of that working.

Be careful what shell you choose also as this may have repercussions on emissions testing etc.

I once spotted a 450 bhp zcars on Garaget.se once (looked like a show car though) - so although i have said the above it must be possible, maybe you could contact them.

Personally because of the uncertainty, I am seriouslt considering a 1380 with specialists 7 port head with ECU. Even then its complicated

Cheers

Craig

the dvd would be great i can sen you my address via pm and i can send you the money for postage

i was looking at the zcars swedish page earlier today and reading their forum that they have there although there isnt alot of info on their just yet they were talking about something to do with weight now i understand what it was about and why they were talking about adding lead balls to the roll cage and then letting them out again after the test and giant 10mm plates under the car that were bolted in plage so they could be removed later although to get 200bhp i would have to get a mini up to 2 tons that seams like a lot of lead and one giant steel plate :()

if the car dosent have to go back to the uk to have things fitted and it can be done here in sweden then i could get a registered car from sweden and build on to that (just a shame they are sooooooo expensive over here i could buy 3 cars in the uk for the same price as a rust bucket in sweden)

anyway i want to get all the facts together before i start anything and thats why i posted on here

thanks for the help and the dvd

michael

Ball bearing, steel plates sounds like a faff!

Buy an uneconomical repair mini in Sweden, and transfer the identity for that to a uk car?

Will post the DVD tomorrow!

dont let the police hear you say that then :(

i know that you can import cars from england i will have to look up how and what costs are involved but as long as i can do all the work here then it shouldn't be a huge problem whatever car i start with

thanks for the dvd

I'm in Finland and the laws are just as vague. Ask the official route and you are only supposed to increase the size of the engine and power by 20% and the weight cannot be changed.
But then you have some of the wildest hotrods and customs driven around town. On paper they are stock specs.
You need to find a MOT guy who is a petrol head and they will give it the all clear. All of which is ignored by the authorities and police as long as you abide by the rules.
Go the Government approved correct route and you are stuffed - especially if you are not a local.
They will make a point of enforcing the law, sort of Wikileaks style.

I would suggest you get a local Swedish Mini that is taxed/MOTd, stick the zcars stuff in it and keep under the radar like the löcåls :P
