Hi
I am about to replace the gearbox on my mini. Should the gearox and transfer case gaskets be installed dry, or should they be installed using a gasket seal, such as hymolar? If they need a sealant, should both sides of the gaskets be coated?

Thanks
John

Just use a light smear of grease on each side of the gasket.

The only part I fit with RTV or similar is the half moon seal and the specific later diff covers that were designed to be fitted with RTV and no gasket.

They ought to seal dry and thickness of the transfer and diff gaskets effects important clearances. The later diff endplate gaskets have an encapsulated sealant (the blue line) and the diff housing to gearbox should use RTV silicone if no gaskets were originally fitted.

As GraemeC states, gaskets should be fitted either dry or with a smear of grease to hold them in place... The use of silicon, RTV, gaskets compound should be restricted to those areas where is specifically required, like the 1/2 moon seal...

The primary requirement is that ALL gaskets faces on blocks, castings etc etc etc are clean, free of any residual gaskets/sealant from any previous fitments and flat. If they are then there is no reason for a gasket to leak..
