hey guys, not been on here for a while but didnt know where else to ask!

basically ive found a car that i want, its a 1962 VW karmann ghia. i checked it on the dvla status check thing and its date of liability was may 2002 so it has been sat for a while.

i asked the neighbour of the drive way that its on, (im a service engineer for warden call systems and was in her flat). and she says its been sat there as long as she can remember but doesnt know who it belongs to. she said next door are students who havnt been there long.

i read on here a while back that somebody was applying to take ownership of an abandoned car via the dvla. but before i do this and upset someone taking their car i was wondering if there is a way i can find out who owns it and have some contact details for them. obviously they might be a bit iffy about giving me details but the way i see it is that i know where the car is, if i was going to steal it i probably would have

has anyone done anything like this?

Apply to the DVLA to become the new registered keeper.

Not sure about the legalities of this, especially if it's on private land!

Besides, the new V5 says in huge letters "This document is not proof of ownership"

Heard this before and they say its worth more than their job! So doubt anyone will do it unfortunately. House contact details first, then close neighbours, then if no luck go to dvla. I seem to remember someone has asked this before if you can find the thread/post.

i dont know any friendly coppers anyway....

i think with it being on a driveway it might be difficult, im not as much fussed about just claiming ownership. id probably much rather meet the owner an at least offer him something for it. maybe get talking about the history and such. although being a council driveway it might technically be theirs if its left there?

i think ill have to knock on doors next time im down there. then contact the dvla.

oh, and i looked for the other thread but couldnt find it

The DVLA will release current owner details for a small fee if they know why you need the information. There is a special form on their website (V888) and maybe your reason will qualify as a "reasonable reason".

http://www.direct.go...ine/DG_10016794
Quote:-
"Use the V888 form to apply for information from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) vehicle records.
If you want to find out information about a vehicle and its owner, you can apply to request this information from the DVLA. However, information will only be released if you are entitled to receive it, for example if you can show 'reasonable cause' to require it."
A. The name and address of the registered keeper of a vehicle at a specific date – the fee is £2.50.

B. Information about a vehicle that was previously registered, or is registered in your name – the fee is £5.

V888 works fine, I had to use it before when someone hit me in Tesco and then was "hard to contact", gave the DVLA the real reason and got their address!

If you go down this route, don't lie about the reason though as there is something like a £50,000 fine for it (it is on the V888 I think)

thanks guys, im going to be applying through the dvla for his details. i dont see a need to lie about the reason, if they dont want to give me the details ill have to find the details some other way.

many thanks, hopefully you will see a new thread in 'other projects' soon. doesnt look like itll need much. it broke down and has been sat since 2002.
dvla website vehicle enquiry said it was built in 1962 but first registered in 1983. might be some history with this car too hopefully

Thanks a lot for this link. If the police can't help, this form should do the trick.
