Right guys i have a 1987 mini mayfair 998 manual

I and am looking to do a metro 1275 conversion have a austin metro 1969 1275 for a doner car. have noticed the radiator is mounted on the front as opposed to the side on the mini. Would this consist of swapping the mini mechanical water pump for the metro one to enable the fan to be mounted on the side...?

what would need to be modified prior to fittment?

would the wiring loom need to be changed?

any other advice helpful

thanks matt

I doubt you have a 1969 Metro, but anyway... I believe the water pump is the same on the Mini and Metro, but you will need to bolt the fan onto it to use the side mounted radiator in your Mini. There is also some difference with the cylinder head. If you look on your Minis cylinder head you willl notice the heater valve on the left hand side. To attach the valve to your Metro engine you willl have to drill out the top of the cylinder head. Don't worry, it's not difficult, but do keep a vacuum cleaner and a magnet there as you do it to collect the swarf.

Other differences are the engine mounts, becuase the Mini and Metro have different subframes. It shouldn't cause a problem as you willl have the right mount in your car allready, unless there is a difference between 998 and 1275 mounts. I'm not sure, but I'm sure someone here can tell you. The speedo cable drive will also need to be swapped over, with the Mini one going onto the Metro gearbox, but again this is not difficult.

You may find some differences with the clutch setup, but this will depend on what year the Metro engine is. The Metro was launched in 1980, so find out what year your donar is and someone can tell you for certain.

Yes sorry the metro is a 1989, is there a way of using the metro heater valve instead of converting it to the mini one? Also could someone verify if the mounts are different.

Cheers matt

The Mini engine mounts will bolt onto the the Metro engine. As for the heater, I'm not sure. On the Metro engine there was a sandwich plate under the thermostat cover and I think this was the heater take off, but I don't know if it can be rigged up on a Mini.

Plumbing it is too much hassel and the hose costs a fortune. I drilled the head on mine - take your time and its fine and work up in drill bit sizes until you've got the right size. The holes are already tapped for the heater take off pipe.

I think that the thermostat sandwich plate became the standard heater take off point on all later mini models any way (the standard heater take off point at the opposite end of the head was then blanked off)

Good point, the MPI Minis used a front mounted radiator, so maybe the heater was plumbed in differently too?

The Metro doesn't have a heater valve, it has an air blend heater.
