Hello,

I have a '94 Mini Mayfair (1275cc manual) that I only got about a month or so ago. It has been very good to me so far, and haven't really had any problems. Then, last week I was at the shops, I got back in my car to drive home. The car started absolutely fine however I noticed that my rev counter has stopped working. I also put my windscreen wipers on at the time as it was raining and they have also cut out (halfway up my window) and will not start again. To start with I thought maybe it was all my electrics that had gone, but my lights were still on and on the way home I noticed that my speedo was still working ok.

I am a big mini enthusiast, but not a very good mechanic. I have checked under the bonnet for any lose wires or anything obvious, but I cant see any major problems. I tried to check the fuse box but the screws were very threaded and I could not get it open. I do not really want to force it open unless I have to.

Do you have any ideas what might cause the wipers and rev counter to stop working?? They both stopped at the same time so I am assuming that it is one problem that has broken both these things. Any help people can give me would be really appreciated. I have still been driving it lately as it seems to run ok, but I am looking outside now and I am pretty sure it is going to rain soon. So the sooner I can fix these problems the better.

Thanks in advance for all your help :w00t:

The wipers and tacho are on the same fuse. The most common problem with them both originates from the wiper motor park switch. This tends to corrode and then fail, along with the last 6" of wiring to it. This shorts the whole circuit and causes all manner of problems. You probably need a new park switch and because this is such a common problem the Mini specialists also sell the wiring connector with 6-8" of wiring attached, ready for you to cut off the existing plug and crimp the replacement on. The park switch is under the wiper motor gearbox casing and simply clips on to it.

The speedo is mechanical by the way.
