Model:City
Year:1988
HI,
I have a 998cc mini automatic which dies when i put it into drive which comes particularly dangerous at traffic lights and junctions as you can imagine. Usually what happens is when i stop the engine drops to 100-200 rpm then stops. Sometimes i can pull the choke out to stop this but it doesn't always work thought. Also i have noticed that when i can then pull off its slow on the uptake for a few seconds then picks up, however once its going it drives perfectly fine. I have been told that it 'could' be the valve heads as ive been running on unleaded fuel which might have damaged them, but i want a second opinion, and im also not very good mechanically with cars so as much info about it would be very appreciated.
cheers

If your valves are for leaded petrol its only as matter of time before you start getting misfires, it may not cause this specific problem but it will become a problem eventually, you can either change the valve heads or start using a lead additive with the unleaded petrol, i would get a mechanic to look over the valves though to make sure they are not already damaged, as far as the problem of dying when stationary my guess would be a clutch problem, thats why the choke helps sometimes, brings the revs up. Like i said though, just a guess.

That could be part of the problem or at least doesnt help it. in the rain the revs go very high and i cant go above 30. if this isnt part of it its certainly another one O_O|
