Im going to be fitting a 12g295 head to my 1989 998 over christmas and thought i would replace the cam followers while im at it, as the old one are quite noisy.

Just want to know to, do i need the ones with oil holes or without? Which were fitted as standard?

Thanks

without is standard. I don't really see the the point of the hole, but that doesn't mean there aren't other benefits in quality.

Don't do it.......unless you are fitting a new camshaft, the old ones will have bedded in with the worn camshaft, fitting new ones will only lead to tears, as they will rapidly wear out ;)

Could just be that they need adjusting, something you will have to do anyway when you change the head over.

Quite true..... also check the condition of the valve pad on the rocker arm ? the bit that contacts the valve top. These can have a groove worn in them and will always rattle because of the extra clearance, if so do not be tempted to close the gap as this will lead to burnt our valves. you have a few options, you can have new rocker arms fitted, get a better condition set or get the pads remachined to suit.....

Just stone the rocker pads smooth....takes seconds. Worth inspecting the cam followers - one at a time so they go back in the holes they come out from......... if any are crazed or pitted - then yes renew the damaged ones. The original A series followers always had holes - so they don't fill up with oil and to aid lubricating the bores they run in - later ones have no holes - whether done for good technical reason (the holes may have been considered to weaken the follower......) or just as a cost saving......who knows.

The ones with holes were not considered suitable for high-revving engines with high-lift cams and heavy-rate valve springs. In fact the oil drains fine with the 'holeless' ones.

speed and inertia dictates that oil doesn't stay in the follower for long...... and it drains down the outside better than via a hole at or near the bottom.

Stone the rocker pads ??? like in the ancient Roman times ? There is absolutely no way that you will get a consistant surface conducive to rocker action by stoneing the pads by hand, if the wear is so small don't touch them at all.

If your followers are that badly worn then it will be because your camshaft is also worn, changing the followers at this point will simply accelerate the wear rates :) An engine with this much wear is best left well alone or fully rebuilding.

As Cooperman says the reason for deleting the oil hole is partly due to failures at high revs, however better reliability and lubrication can be obtained without the oil hole.

I shall just change the head then an leave the rest alone. There not that noisy, (for 106,000 on the clock) just thought id change the followers while head was off.
