I have got roughly 55.1 miles out of half a tank.

It cost around £35 to fill up a 7 Gal tank.

Does this sound right to anyone? It is a Rover mini 35 1275.

Edit - Wow, just seen the major typo on the title. Sorry folks.

Unless my maths is very wrong then 55.1 miles/3.5 gallons = 15.74 miles per gallon.... which isn't at all good!!

Is it actually half a tank though, or are you relying on the notoriously inaccurate mini fuel gauge to tell you where "half" is. According to my gauge, my mini uses the 1st quarter of a tank to do about 130 miles then burns through the remaining 3/4 over the next 50 or so!! Better to fill it up to the top, then take the mileometer reading, then fill it up to the top again after a set amount of miles (say 100 to make the maths easy) & then calculate exactly how many litres you have used and your actual MPG!

Sounds excessive. Especially as the first "half" is the big half.

Has it been tuned recently? Does the oil smell of petrol? Is the overflow pipe ok? Is the fuel cap leaking? Are the fuel lines in good nick?

To be fair, my 52 plate mondeo doesn't use each 1/4 of the guage equally, does about 500 on the first half, and 200 on the second half!

As AVV IT says, the only way is to fill it until it clicks, do a set mileage, and fill it again then do the maths!

Well, When we first got it we put around £32 in which only got us to around half full. So I assumed I had half a tank more than the gauge was telling me... until the beginning of this week when the gauge showed nothing and I broke down.

I then filled it up to the click and 6 days and 55miles later I'm half a tank down.

£32 and half full, then 55 miles and you broke down? You've got a serious problem there.

I do roughly 100 miles a week (work and back) and costs me about a tenner, and I'm running a Weber.

Thats very wrong. At current prices, thats roughly 22 litres. A 7.5 gallon tank is around 34 litres.
So your gauge is out. And your consumption is very high aswell, a tenner should get you alot mroe than 30 miles.

Do a propr consumption test. Brim fill it and note the mileage. Drive it for a while until it reads nearly empty, then brim it again. Then you can measure the actual consumption. Mini gauges are so inaccurate.

Well no, you don't have to drive it until nearly empty at all. All that matters is that you brim fill it the first time & take note of the milage then brim fill it again at some point on that tank of fuel, taking note of the new mileage, along with the amount of fuel needed to brim fill it again. It doesn't matter if you have used one gallon or seven as you are calculating miles per gallon, not miles per tank!(& if you really want to know the miles per tank you just multiply the MPG by seven!!....)

Absolutely correct, I was just thinking that it saves another stop if you run it until the point when you think it needs a good drink, but of course, if you want a quick answer, just do 30 to 40 miles before brimming it a second time. Either way you get the actual consumption. I also have a Rover 214 which holds 11 gallons. It reads 3/4 full when brimmed and empty when it still has 5 gallons in. I zero the trip when I fill it and fill again after it's done 250 miles.
