hi, ive done a fair bit with naturally aspirated engines, but am going to have a go at forced induction next year, i dont know a great deal about turbos, i know the obvious, like the exhaust gases spin the turbo, and i need a lower compression ratio.

The engine will be a 1330 with omega pistons, and the usual strapped, lightened and balanced crank. 11 stud head and block (ill be converting the block tommorow). Straight cut box and drop gears, etc.

Things im unsure with are,

camshafts : i have a minisport ca2 cam, which is quite mild, can i use this for turbo?

Compression ratio : should i be aiming for something like 8.5:1?

Turbo oil feed : im guessing i can take an oil feed for the turbo from where the oil pressure switch screws in, and return the oil to the engine via the fuel pump hole?

Cylinder heads : do i need a head with special valves, can i use a modified big valve 12g940?

Bulkhead box : how much needs chopping and has anyone got any pics?

Turbos : which turbos are there out there that i can use, other than the metro one, which if im right is a t3?

Thanks, sorry if i sound dumb, its just ive never done anything forced induction wise, and help is much appreciated.

the CA2 will be ok, possibly slightly better than the std turbo cam.

8.5:1 is a good figure to aim for it will allow for a decent amount of boost.

oil feed, yes, out the oil pressure hole and in the pump hole.

Head, use normal uprated stainless valves, don't go too big on the valve sizes, heat cracking etc.

Bulkhead box is not always needed, you can get an exhaust manifold from mirage or turbophil that will fit with certain turbos.

Turbo wise there is a lot of scope, it basically comes down to how much adaption you want to do to make it fit. T2's from the renault 5 are popular, the GT17 from the saab95, but your probably best going with the std T3 until you have a bit more experience (unless you want to avoid the bulkhead box)
Also turbo choice isnt just a case of T2,T3 ect, there are usuall lots of compressor and turbine wheel shape and sizes for each turbo.

i would stay clear of bulkhead boxes and the need for BIVA tests

Thought it was confirmed that turbo bulkhead boxes were okay?

Listen to bungle :D

on another note,
how much does it cost machining wise to convert to 11 stud?

i do mine myself, but i do have access to proper machinery to do so. I think its normally around £30 for the block and head to be done.

Ive also heard theres another water way that can be drilled into the block near cylinder 4, to improve the coolant flow around the end cylinders, got to look into this though.

And thanks for answering my questions mini13 :D

ahh nice, may give you £30 to do mine haha!
yeah i hear they do that as when you wind up the boost the 4th has a tendancy to melt!

I would personally avoid a bulkhead box, not for any other reason than it's a pain, as it affects engine mountings and the heater. Plus there are plenty of people who'll make a manifod for reasonable money to allow fitment of almost any turbo that will be suitable.

i would dismiss out of hand the T3.

How does it effect engine mounts?

Im currently gathering parts to convert to turbo.

If you have an additional engine steady on the thermostat housing you'll end up with nowhere to put the bracket on the bulkhead.
