Evening all, my brother has a mini city automatic which he wants to convert to a manual. I have heard he will need to change the front sub frame but his mate has told him that it might not have to? any information would be much appreciated. cheers guys.

you don't have to but you will have to make some spacers i think because the engine mounts are slightly different

You can get spacers, not seen them recently though. The reason for the spacers is that the Auto-gearbox is a bit ( well lot ) bigger externally than the manual box, so the subframe is slightly wider at the bottom to accomodate, which moves the mounts further apart..

Also,

The wiring loom for the ignition is linked to the auto gear selector. You will need to trace this back to the red & white wire (normally above the heater). Unplug the selector wires (usually green) and loop the red & white. :wink:

** if you don't do this your engine will not start as the loom will think the selector is still in gear ** :sad:

When I first did this conversion, this little mod took about a week to trace. I tried everything before realising what it was.

Other than the subframe being different, and changing the boxes over, and a little mod to the wiring...

What else has to be done? I have been offered a mint Auto that I want to convert to Manual

that would suggest why those wires are looped LOL!

I am using an auto wiring harness in mine (the original one was all rotten and had bared wires). I was thinking of using the inhibitor loom for a sort of extra immobiliser (a hidden little switch somewhere).

Anyway,

I have PM'd you about a front subby I have spare, forgot to mention it has the top and bottom arms, cones, trumpets and tie bars, so it is ready to go. I have also got a spare pedal box for your conversion. I am prolly about an hour south-south east from you (straight down the A49). :wink:
