hi all,been meaning to ask this question for a while now but didnt want to seem stupid! my spi has the engine number stamped into the block,is this how its supposed to be or should it have a plate like the older minis? i know its had a replacment engine as i have the receipts.the car is a 94 but the engine is from a 96 spi if this helps.thanks in advance

I think it was rover saving money, farely sure my mpi is the same

The engine number, should be stamped into a metail plate, which is riveted to the engine block, in the highlighted area in the photo. If oyurs is purely stamped into the block, I would say this means the engine has been modified by an engine builder inthe past, and he has used his own ID marks. Does your current number start with 12H? ... and does it match the V5?

As far as Im aware Rover started engraving the engine numbers into the blocks some time in the 90's about the same time they started stamping vin numers into the bodyshells. This was done to comply with the changes in the regulations for marking vehical identities.
It is a goog way to identify a genuine spi block as a rule of thumb if the number starts 12H, but for some reason they never seemed to stop drilling the rivet holes as all the engraved bocks I have have them.
