try earthing the cable for the sender unit to the chassis and see what your gauge does, it should go to full or passed it, if it only goes to 1/4 then you have a faulty gauge, sorry a wasted sender unit..

Rather than starting a new thread i thought i would just add a question on this one.

My mini was just touching the red marker on the fuel gauge, i went and filled up and it only took 19.38 litres.

Is it my sender unit or the voltage stabiliser that is dodgy on mine?

Or is it just the usual thing with minis and the fuel gauges not being great?

i reckon i am gettin about 170-200 miles before it looks like i need to fill up but i reckon i still have about a third of a tank when it is touching the red marker.

Any help much appreciated as normal!!

You have quite a few litres left once your needle hits the red marker! In fact a gallon or two!

The red doesn't mean "as soon as the needle gets here panic and refuel". It means you are running low. It's the same on pretty much every car ever made. Just learn how far through the red you can get before you do run out.

Small but sweet, connect the two cables on the sender unit to each other instead of to the sender (use a paper clip or something). This will earth out the gauge and remove the sender from the circuit. You should now see the gauge move to the very top of the full end of the scale. If not then something other than the sender is broken. Connect it back up properly and now try the engine temperature gauge. Remove the cable from the sender for this (under the thermostat housing in the cylinder head or a sandwich plate) and clip it onto the threads at the top of one of the head studs (any earth around the engine will do but these are about the right size to fix the connector to and in a convenient place). Now you should see the temperature gauge at the top of it's scale. If this gauge is working and the other isn't then it's most likely to be the fuel gauge which is broken. Sadly you have to buy both gauges as one unit but it's not too much hassle. If neither gauge is working then it's most likely the voltage stabiliser which could be a problem depending on the age of your car as the PCB for the later gauge pack is getting hard to find. In either case it's possible that a gauge specialist such as Speedy Cables could repair it for you.
